Mustaqbal Disability

MDA focuses on persons with disabilities because they are extremely marginalized, excluded and affected by the protracted conflict in Somalia. PWDs are disproportionately and likely to live in poverty due to the humanitarian crisis and, too often, lack access to education, health care, employment opportunities, housing, social protection systems, justice, cultural expression and participation in development. The ability of persons with disabilities to participate in society is often frustrated because of a variety of societal, environmental, attitude and communication barriers. They remain vulnerable and marginalized, may be hidden at homes, miss the opportunity to participate in needs assessments, and too often not consulted in developmental programs. Disability is part of the human condition. Globally, over 1 billion persons, or 15 percent of the world’s population live with some form of disability. In Somalia, as in most regions of Africa, persons with disabilities face exclusion, discrimination and challenges that bar them from enjoying their fundamental rights and ensure their inclusion in development. The ability of persons with disabilities to participate in society is often frustrated on the ground of their disabilities. We are indigenous disabled People Organization in Baidoa founded by a group of Somali intellectuals who felt that PwDs needed value-based abilities to cope with life’s challenges in Somalia context. We believe that if PWDs are empowered with the necessary skills, they can make the right choices through situational analysis, critical thinking and making informed decisions thereby reducing their vulnerabilities.
